Hair loss

Hair loss can be deeply upsetting for both men and women. It is impossible to overstate the negative effect on self-esteem that hair loss can cause. Alopecia may cause patchy or complete hair loss, whilst male pattern baldness causes hair to recede from the front and crown of the head.

For women, there is a social stigma attached to going bald. Beautiful hair is associated with sensuality and it can therefore affect how you perceive yourself. Around 65% of women over 65 will experience some degree of female pattern hair loss which is related to age related hormonal changes.

Male pattern hair loss can be very upsetting for men, even though it is relatively common. Around 50% of men will experience male pattern baldness by the time they are 50. Male patter hair loss is thought to be partly genetic and related to the production of androgenic hormones.

Alopecia areata is a type of hair loss that occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles. Damage to the follicle is usually not permanent. The condition usually affects people under 20, but children and adults of any age may be affected. Women and men are affected equally.
