Body Fat And Weight Management
Weight management and reducing specific areas of body fat are big concerns today. While body fat is an essential part of our make up, too much fat or adipose tissue can be very unhealthy, leading to obesity, metabolic disorder and type 2 diabetes. Even if body fat is at a healthy level, it often deposits in areas where we don’t want it, or when we try to lose weight, fat is lost from the face and breasts and not from the stomach areas or thighs where we may wish to reduce it.
In women unwanted fat may deposit around the bra strap line, tops of arms, stomach, thighs and bottom, while men often attract fat around the stomach area. These differences in body fat distribution are because of hormonal differences between men and women.
Types of body fat (adipose tissue)
There are two main types of body fat which may give rise to us looking or feeling fat.
- Subcutaneous fat. This type of fat lies just below the skin. SOme areas of the body have more subcutaneous fat than others. The thighs will for example have more subcutaneous fat than the lower legs (calves). This type of fat can usually be reduced with diet or by physical means such as liposuction.
- Visceral fat. This type of fat is located inside the body cavity, around the major organs. Too much of this type of fat results in hormone changes which may result in metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. This type of fat can only be reduced by following a healthy diet.
