Acne is a chronic inflammatory disease of the sebaceous hair follicles. Each follicle contains a tiny hair and multiple sebaceous glands. Acne occurs when the skin produces an excessive amount of oil or the oil producing glands are blocked (resulting in blackheads). Acne can also be caused by a bacterium, Propionobacterium acnes (P. acnes) which causes inflammation in the blocked glands.
Acne cannot be caught from other people and some people are more prone than others. It can also be influenced by factors such as genes, hormones, pollution and diet. It is common to develop acne on those areas of the skin with lots of sebaceous glands, such as the face, scalp, neck, chest, back, upper arms and shoulders.
What treatments can help with acne?
Different people respond to different treatments when it comes to improving acne or acne scarring. A chemical peel, for example, can make a significant difference in some cases, as can a HydraFacial treatment or Fractora skin resurfacing. Other people respond well to using acne-focused cosmeceuticals as part of their daily skincare regime.
Dr Gauba is also licensed to prescribe topical antibiotics, retinol creams, and oral Roaccutane, if you have severe acne.
